Sunday Morning Stroll in Mallorca

How exciting, my very first location on my very first contract!

24/2/2019

I went to bed Saturday night tired from running Holiday full out in costume for the first time, but excited because the next morning I didn’t have IPM (In Port Manning. If a crew member has IPM, they must stay on the ship in case the ship sinks.) and I was determined to get off the boat in Palma de Mallorca. I woke up every hour that night, dually anticipating 7 am and worrying the boat was sinking. This was because my cabin was at the bow of the ship on Deck 2, so we hit the waves first. I expect rough seas to be funnnnn. Finally, at 6:30 am I deemed it early enough to wake and dress. I had a myriad of things to do before 8:00 am:

1) I headed to the crew purser, the wonderful lady who gives us everything from room assignments to wifi passwords. I had to exchange keys because I was moving to a Deck 3 cabin with our new artist!

2) I then moved all of my items to the new cabin, which was exactly the same structurally, but somehow possessed a better vibe than the Deck 2 room.

3) I went to the new crew mess for breakfast, which is beautiful, where I ate alone amongst the deck crew and housekeeping staff. I watched the Tailor eat and then head to work, so I tailed him to get new sheets (I was bitten by bugs in my Deck 2 cabin. If ya know, ya know.)

4) Finally, I disembarked!

MALLORCA, AHHHHHH!!!!

After living on the ship for four days, I felt like running in circles! I had to be back on the ship for rehearsal by noon and I didn’t want to wait for any public transport, so I jumped into a taxi and asked how much it would be to be taking to el centro. Thankfully, I had just enough to be taken to the Cathedral. The taxi ride featured an enjoyable view of the harbor and a pleasant conversation with the driver, who was born and raised on the island. He told me that, as it was Sunday, nothing would be open until half past ten. On the bright side, there would be no crowds! He also told me about the public transportation system, where the taxis were located, and a few tips about where to go. Truth be told, I only had about three hours, and everything was, indeed, closed. So, I took some gorgeous pictures of the Cathedral, which towers over everything else in the square, and then began to wander.

The streets reminded me of Barcelona, all colorful buildings based with tapas restaurants and topped with old-timey apartments. I even found La Rambla in Mallorca by accident! Again, deserted, save a flower stand.

I wouldn’t say that I ran out of things to do, but I did decide to walk all the way back to Cara, as it was a beautiful day and it would take me about an hour and half to do so. Here are some lovely pictures from my morning stroll:

All in all, it was very nice to get off the ship and reaffirm one of the main reasons why I took this job, which was to travel. It is easy to get caught up in the separate world onboard, especially now during our premiere weeks. I’m excited to see where else we get to go!
